This Wabash-based trucking company makes a sweet impression on its hometown

Let us just start by asking you an interesting question… In your years as a trick-or-treater, do you ever remember collecting candy that cascaded to the street from a dump truck in your downtown? Because… Downtown Wabash has that. And it’s called Trick-or-Treat Extravaganza.

Picture this: You’ve arrived in Downtown Wabash dressed to the stars in your best dinosaur, Spider-Man, Hocus Pocus, Stranger Things or pirate costume. You’re headed to Miami Street from around the corner of Charley Creek Inn or Modoc’s Market. And before your eyes is a raised truck bed, loaded with candy (and not the cheap stuff, either) and spooktacularly sweet prizes in the form of a Gebhart Golden Ticket…

Your sweet tooth starts to ache and your eyes light up in anticipation. What you’re about to witness is the thrilling and sugary equivalent of the New Year’s Eve Ball Drop in Times Square: a costumed extravaganza for all, a display of how much Wabash Trucking loves its hometown and a demonstration of why Downtown Wabash, Inc. puts on the events that it does.

Our office works with Wabash Trucking to provide a wildly unique experience a family could have in their hometown. Imagine seeing A LITERAL TON of candy falling to the street while trick-or-treat buckets wait in costume to collect their treats. And a spectacle it is! An added bonus…sweets and treats with hidden prizes. Trick-or-Treat Extravaganza is like pre-Christmas!

Who is Wabash Trucking? Let us tell you! Wabash Trucking is a licensed and bonded full truckload logistics company based right here in Wabash, Indiana. Its mission: to provide safe and reliable logistics services to its customers while operating the business with the utmost integrity and professional manner to protect customers, vendors and employees.

And how does Wabash Trucking fit into the threads of Downtown Wabash, let alone this candy-filled event? It’s simple: Wabash Trucking wanted to give back to the community in a big way (think a 2,000 lb. way) while showcasing their new “Feed Me” roll off dumpster design. Their motto? Go big or go home. They were unaware of any other surrounding community that provided this type of elaborate spectacle to provide a new, fun experience. They are ecstatic to be back for the 4th year to carry on the 2,000 lb candy dump tradition.

How does this tie into the Downtown Wabash, Inc. mission? It’s simple. Our vision for Downtown Wabash is a vibrant downtown every day and night. Our mission? To be a catalyst for community and economic revitalization in Downtown Wabash. When this event draws nearly 2,000 people into our showstopper of a Downtown, we’re drawing attention to businesses and amenities all within 2.5 miles of walkable terrain. (And we think that’s pretty cool.) Out of those 2,000 people in attendance, a vast majority are children. What better way to show young kids the cool things in their hometown than the greatest spectacle in candy?

It takes a whole team of devoted community leaders to attract crowds of these numbers to Downtown Wabash. For Downtown Wabash, Inc. to put on this sweet extravaganza means to work with Wabash Trucking for the coveted candy dump, Bachelor Creek to host the best costume contest in all age categories, Downtown Wabash businesses for hunkering down outside of their businesses to pass out MORE candy, local food trucks, photographers, community vendors, local first responders and so many more people. It’s by these generous supporters, through donations of candy, volunteer time and amenities, that this event is free to the public, and for that, we cannot thank them enough.

The Downtown Wabash Trick-or-Treat Extravaganza is an annual event in Downtown Wabash on the Saturday before Halloween from 5-7 p.m. Collect your candy from the Wabash Trucking candy dump until it runs out and then walk to more businesses to collect even more candy.

2022 Date: Saturday, Oct. 29 from 5-7 p.m. (Rain Date: Sunday, Oct. 30 from 2-4 p.m.)

Downtown Wabash is not just a destination in Indiana, it’s also a nonprofit organization leading the way for economic revitalization. In 1981, the Wabash community created our nonprofit organization from the “Main Street Movement,” which was born at the national level as an economic development tool. Originally known as Wabash Marketplace, the organization embarked on a full rebrand in 2022. The work remains the same: bring livelihood to Downtown Wabash.

Our vision is a downtown that is vibrant, every day and night. 24/7, 365 days a year. People overflowing onto the sidewalks. Marquee lights shining bright every night. Plentiful dining options for every craving. Shopping to your heart’s content. The vision is bold and bright!

Our mission is to be a catalyst for community and economic revitalization, as a nonprofit organization utilizing the Main Street Approach™ in Downtown Wabash. As Wabash County collectively takes on the goal of growing its population, downtown districts are identified as key drivers for quality of life. If the downtown area is thriving, the health of the overall community is strong.

“When a town has a healthy small-business district, property values rise and housing demand increases. Downtown districts become a point of pride and a place to show off to friends and family when they visit. It becomes a neighborhood. People may have taken it for granted before, but we see now that it could be gone and that does a lot to your personal quality of life.”
Matt Wagner, Chief Program Officer at Main Street America

The public knows us best by our free events. More than 20,000 people attend downtown events every year. First Fridays are a smashing success with thousands in attendance every month. First Fridays increase retail sales by more than 350% compared to an average Friday. Wabash Farmers Market hosted over 45 vendors throughout the 2022 season and generated more than $150,000 in sales. Contributions ensure our free events continue to offer quality gathering opportunities for our community.

While we host more than 50 events per year, our organization represents much more. We’re here for small business support: 14 new businesses opened their doors in 2021 resulting in 12 full-time and 13 part-time jobs. We host monthly networking meetings, provide business consulting, and even offer financial support with grants, loans and scholarships! We help advertise property vacancies and housing opportunities. Plus, we keep our pulse on historic preservation topics relevant to Downtown Wabash and we partner with the City of Wabash to administer the Wabash Cultural District with the Indiana Arts Commission.

“As a new business in town, I needed support. Downtown Wabash, Inc. was there to provide guidance, introduce me to neighbors and be my champion. Their team is incredible and make my life as a small business owner so much easier.”

Drew Siddall, Owner of Downtown Nutrition
