Papel picado, or, perforated paper or pecked paper, is a traditional Mexican decorative craft made by cutting elaborate designs into sheets of tissue paper. This is also a form of traditional folk art!

Downtown Wabash First Fridays in 2022 are sponsored by Crossroads Bank, Beacon Credit Union, 95.9 KISS FM, Wabash County Museum and Pettit Printing.

Tissue Paper Flower Folk Art

Mexica-Arts founder, Emily J. Guerrero, is a passionate advocate of Mexican cultural arts and embodies her ancestral traditions through storytelling performances, arts and workshops. Emily will demonstrate and teach how to make tissue paper flowers and share the flowers’ symbolism in Mexican cultural traditions.

The Latin Dance Workshop is a culturally immersive experience where participants will learn about the most iconic Latin dance forms such as Salsa, Bachata, Merengue and Reggaetón including their origins. This workshop will be presented by Colombian instructor Paola Cubides. She grew up dancing to cultural celebrations and family traditions in her hometown Bogotá. She is proud of her heritage and would love to share it with you! We hope to see you there!

In Honor of Hispanic Heritage Month

Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.

Downtown Wabash, Inc., organizer of Downtown Wabash First Friday, has cultivated a community street festival environment for more than 10 years and intends to utilize that environment as a platform for Hispanic artists and business owners to share their culture. Eclectic Shoppe in Downtown Wabash is Latina-owned by Maria Smyth and is well loved by the community.

“I’m thrilled to see Downtown Wabash, Inc. taking part in the celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month during First Friday. Thank you to Downtown Wabash, Inc. for encouraging diversity and members of the Hispanic Community to share and take part in celebrating the Hispanic Culture. ”

Maria Smyth, Owner of Eclectic Shoppe
